Infatuation In Pomona

James C. McCaul was a business partner of Russell A. Alger.

A Doctor's Wife In California Elopes With A Strolling Player

Pomona, Cal., Jan. 31--A strange case of the infatuation of a wealthy, refined, and educated woman for a strolling actor has just come to light in Pomona.  After seven years of happy married life, Mrs. Thaddeus L. [Eva] Johnson, whose father, James C. McCaul of Detroit, has been for twenty-five years business agent for Gen. Russell A. Alger, and whose husband is a cousin of ex-Congressman Tom Johnson of Ohio, has deserted her husband to live with an actor, known as William Bell, in the Leonard Grover Comedy Company, but whose true name is said to be R. A. Norton.  Published in the New York Times on 1 Feb 1897.

It appeared that Mrs. Eva McCaul Johnson married Grant Price in Detroit on 4 January 1899.

From the Cleveland Public Library's Necrology database:

Source: Source unknown;  Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #066.

In 1910 she was a widow living with her mother, Sarah McCaul, and also Olive E. Scott.

Note: Eva McCaul Johnson was born in Au Sable, Iosco County, Michigan, a place we used to call home.
