A commenter asked about the identity of Julia's parents after reading the blog post about Major Henry Z. Curtis.
Major Henry Z. Curtis's widow, Julia Dudley (Courtis/Courtes**), sister of Lt. Frank Courtis, married 2nd Andrew Baird in 1870, as was living in California. *Maiden name given as Dudley on the marriage record; **In Julia's affidavit to restore her widow's pension, she gave her maiden name as "Courtes" but stated that her parents died when she was very young and was raised by Col. Ambrose & Clara Dudley in Cincinnati, Ohio... .
Most of the information about Julia was extracted from her extensive widow's application for a Civil War pension from the Federal Government (online at Fold3.com). Perhaps her parents' names could be found by following her brother's (Frank Courtis) paper trail instead.
The first item about Frank came from Passport Applications online:

Admiral Courtis's obituary in the New York Times.
Checked Hamilton County, Ohio, Probate Records, 1789-1996, Hamilton Probate minutes index 1790-1852 and found an entry for Julia.
It did not appear as though the volume needed to find the original record was online at FamilySearch.org yet.
Julia was living with Ambrose and Clara Dudley in Ohio in 1850.
Found more information about Julia and her brother, but not the given names of their parents.
