Dr. John Joseph Garrett, my great-grandfather, who was born on August 4, 1868, was a 2nd generation Arkansian. His father, George Washington Garrett, was born in Arkansas in 1843; his mother was W. Jane (probably nee Hankins). He married Sophia Jeannette Swinyer (daughter of David and Mary Jane (Snay) Swinyer), a native of New York, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on December 29, 1897.
