MAYFIELD - A Coincidence: Mrs. Jane Shephard and Mrs. Belle Downing's birthdays occurred Wednesday, December 22, 1841 and last year accidentally met at Mrs. Downing's and then decided that thereafter they would meet alternately at each other's homes to keep in remembrance their birthdays. Dec. 22nd, 1896 was held at Mrs. J. Shephard's. Turkey, mince pies and other goodies were served besides dainty serviceable presents exchanged and decided to meet at Mrs. Downing's in 1899 providence permitting. Notwithstanding Mrs. Downing had been confined to the house for the past three months and the weather was also very inclement, yet it did not deter her from having an enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. T. Baker of Lapeer and Mrs. Samuel Baker of Plainwell, Mich., were participants.
