Pierre Menard - A Special Illinois Politician
The house of Pierre Menard (1766 - 1844) near Kaskaskia, Illinois. Pierre Menard was a French Canadian who became the first lieutenant-governor of Illinois. The Illinois constitution was amended specifically so Mr. Menard, who was not a natural-born citizen, would be eligible for the office.
The Chicago Historical Society has the original papers of Mr. Menard.
A tip from Midwestern Microhistory: A Genealogy Blog led to the Northwest Territory collection online. Papers that mentioned Kaskaskia were found here and specifically one quoting Mr. Menar(d) in a deposition.
