His picture was displayed at the historical Pierre Menard house which we toured during our day in Kaskaskia and Ste. Genevieve. Nathaniel Pope and Pierre Menard were friends and contemporaries.
The Chicago Historical Society has the original papers of Mr. Menard:
Nathaniel Pope is a descendant of William Backus as am I. His mother was Lucretia Backus, daughter of Elijah Backus. His son was Civil War General John Pope.
We didn't tour the Menard house seeking a genealogical connection; nevertheless there it was.
