Not only did I get a translation for my "A Note About Valentine Coleman" blog post (thank you very much), the comments pertaining to that blog post included so much good information (and information that was new to me) I didn't want to leave them hidden. (Thanks for the comments, Apple, Patti and Marlys, I really appreciate the generous help and encouragement).
Patti pointed to this site that provided a sample of writing similar to the Valentine Coleman note, specifically the word "Jahr" which she told me was "year" in English. She also provided a site for professional help for translations if needed. And finally, there's a site sponsored by The Center For Family History and Genealogy at Brigham Young University here.
Marlys told me that the note was written in English and Suetterlin -- I had never heard of Suetterlin before. Now, with this website, I can write my name in Suetterlin!
There's a free Suetterlin font at this site, although I did not download it.
