The Plight of Mrs. Romain Porter, Nee Mentag

In 1900, Romain Porter's father, George, was living with Harry & Della Gray, in Grand Traverse Co., as their uncle (Della's parents were Harley & Janie (Pratt) Holliday). Romain's mother, Lucinda, was listed as the head of household in the census taken in Charlevoix Co., MI, with her sons Romain and Ward living with her as well as a border.

In 1910 George Porter is a divorced boarder with the Reuben Stiles family in Grand Traverse Co.; did not locate Lucinda, Romain or Ward Porter.

In 1920 Lucinda Porter was a "widow" living in Genesee County with "single" sons Romain and Ward. Romain was not listed as "divorced" or as a widower.

George & Lucinda Porter are indexed in the Chancery Court records for Grand Traverse Co., MI., here. [Probably their divorce proceedings]

What happened to them after 1920? Was Mrs. Romain Porter (nee Mary Mentag) still living? There is a Mary Porter, age 39, listed as a "widow" in the 1920 census taken in Grand Traverse Co., MI, who is a teacher, born in Michigan with parents born in Germany (Mary Mentag's parents were both born in Germany). There was an Alice Porter, age 15, living with her, too, although they were both enumerated as boarders. Don't think Mary the school teacher was the impoverished and ill Mary living in Genesee County in 1917, but can't say for sure.
