They (American militia) assembled at Fort Dayton in the upper Mohawk Valley....grimly the men of Tyron County scanned their own dead. ...reached the safety of Fort Dayton...(General) Herkimer, the amputation of his leg botched by crude surgery, soon died, reading his Bible and puffing his pipe to the end.
