Mrs. Lucinda Johnson Who Never Was

Lapeer County, Michigan
Probate File #455
March 29, 1866

In the matter of Helen Wells, et al, minors, records held in Michigan, Probate Records, 1797-1973 Lapeer Estate files 1866-1867. Mrs. Lucinda Johnson, Guardian

On this document (dated December 7, 1867) the guardian of the minor children of Elisha Wells stated that she was appointed guardian under the name of Lucinda Johnson; however, that was in error.  At the time her surname was Wells, not Johnson, and that she was never married to Johnson. Since her appointment as guardian, she intermarried with John Halpin and her name is now Lucinda Halpin.

United States Census, 1880
Household Gender Age Birthplace
self John Halpin  M  43 Ireland
wife Lucinda Halpin F  49  New York, United States
daughter Margeret Halpin  F 7  Michigan, United States
daughter Dell [Lucy] Johnson F 16 Michigan, United States

Lucinda was living in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, during the winter of 1908 in the care of T. J. Taylor (and Lucy Taylor who was her only child with Ambrose Johnson).  She had been separated from Halpin since 1882.  She supported herself by cooking in lumber camps.

Lucinda's 90th birthday celebration was chronicled in the Bay City Times published on July 19, 1919.  The article stated that she was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 18, 1829.

Lucinda Halpin, of Bay City, Michigan, died June 21, 1923.

Not related, just a Lapeer County story of interest to me.
