A Despondent & Elderly Mrs. Martha Shinn

After Timothy Boden died, his widow, Elizabeth, a "washerwoman" in the 1860 census, had two borders living with her on the corner of Adams and John R. street in Detroit; Mrs. Martha Shinn, age 82, and Martha's daughter, Elizabeth Shinn.

1860 MI Census Wayne Co., Detroit
Boden, Elizabeth, 33, b. England, washerwoman
", Emma, 12, b. MI
", George, 10, b. MI
", Elizabeth, 6, b. MI
", Timothy J., 4, b. MI
Shinn, Martha, 82, b. England
", Elizabeth, 40, b. England

Mrs. Shinn was in destitute circumstances and her daughter, Elizabeth, had been bedridden and ill for some time. The despondent Mrs. Shinn took matters into her own hands as related to the "Tribune" and printed in Vincent's semi-annual United States register in 1860:

This incident took place at John R & Adams Street in downtown Detroit which is now Comerica Park where the Detroit Tigers play.

Those old obituaries were so graphic in describing details of accidents, murders, and suicides. I'm about to post one for a great-uncle who died of a horrible accident. It's always sad when someone commits suicide.

Graphic is a good way to describe it. Your post sounds intriguing.
