Fritz (Frederick) Eickhoff, Charles' brother, is listed as "idiotic" on the 1860 census. Additional information indicates that Charles Eickhoff's son, Arlington Eickhoff, was a graduate of the Gallaudet University (a school for the deaf) and was a teacher at the Flint (MI) School for the Deaf (as was his wife, Anna (Lennon) Eickhoff; was Fritz deaf and not "idiotic"?

Included was the notation that the father of Charles Eickhoff, 87, had died in Woodland, NY (18 March 1897). Since my ancestors lived in an adjacent county (Roscommon), I will be perusing the Avalanche transcriptions again.
